Research and Planning: Audience interview analysis (Music magazine)

I asked a person who is a similar age to the age range I am aiming my magazine to. I asked the person the following questions about my magazine. The questions are on the image on the left of the blog. The answers the person gave me will help me produce my magazine.

The first question I asked was 'can you name any artists that are associated with R&B and Rap?', The answer the person gave me was Jay-Z, Kanye West and Rihanna. This will help me because I will know which artists I need to include on my cover lines for the front cover.

The second question I asked was 'which three colours would you associate with R&B and Rap?' this will give me an idea of what the colour scheme would be for my magazine. The person told me that black, white and gold are all associated with this genre of music. I may not use this colour scheme but it might help me to decided which colours I would like to use on my magazine.

The third question I asked was 'do you buy music magazines regularly?'. The answer the person gave me was no. This tells me that not everyone buys music magazines even if they are interested in that genre of music.

The fourth question I asked was 'what cover lines/stories would you like to read about in an R&B/Rap genre magazine?'. The answer he gave was interviews need to be included, the latest gigs in the local area and maybe a chart which would include the latest music to be associated with this genre of music.

The fifth question I asked was 'do you like the masthead name Authority for a music magazine?'. The answer the person gave was yes. This implies that I should stick to the name Authority of my music magazine.

The sixth question I asked was 'should the model of the magazine cover be male or female?'. The answer the person gave was male, therefore I am making the model of my magazine male.

The seventh question I asked was 'what should the image look like for a music magazine?'. The answer he gave was that the model needs to have a serious face and to wear clothes like tank tops. When I come to take pictures of my model I would need to make them look close to what the person has said.

The last question I asked was 'what is the first thing you look for in a music magazine?'. He said that he looks for a good cover line that would persuade him to read the magazine. This means that when I come to produce my music magazine I need to have an interesting cover line to persuade people to want to read my magazine but the cover line still needs reference to the genre of music which i have chosen.

Research and Planning: Props and Costume Research (Images)

Here I am going to do my own internet research on what artists or people who listen to this genre of music wear and what props they may have on a magazine cover.

Here is an image of Eminem. The clothes that he is wearing is a leather jacket with a plain white top. He is also wearing black jeans as well. When I come to taking pictures of the main artist I need to make sure that they are wearing plain clothes with no designs on them. This is because the artists who are associated with this genre of music just wear plain clothing. He has also got some props. He is wearing a gold chain which has a cross on it and he is wearing a gold watch. This is to show that rappers are rich and they like to express them selfs to be rich.

Here is an image of Jay-Z. He is wearing similar clothing to the image of Eminem above. Jay-Z is wearing a white t-shirt which is what Eminem is also wearing and he is also wearing a prop which is a chain that has a cross on it. This implies that I need to make my model wear a chain of some sorts and a plain white top.

Research and Planning: Props, location and costumes list

Here I am going to show you three lists that I have created to show which props I want to use, where the location is that I am going to take the pictures and the costumes that the model would be wearing.

Props:
  • Microphone
  • Speakers

  • Location:
  • Outside
  • Alley way
  • Car park

  • Nike trainers
  • Jewellery

Research and Planning: Double page spread analysis

Here is a double page spread of a music magazine. I am going to talk about the genre of the magazine double spread, the layout, the representation and finally the audience.

Genre
The genre of the magazine looks to be dub step/r&b/electronic. I can tell this because of the image used. The image used shows a man who is laid back but also has a facial expression which could also mean that he is acting serious. The clothes that the model is wearing could also give a hint at what the genre is. Finally it says "disco revenge" as the main title, this shows that the model maybe a DJ at a disco and may play dub step/r&b/electronic genre.

Layout
Next is there layout of the double page spread. The double page spread is spread out equally. All of the writing is in columns which makes the double page spread neat and tidy but also makes it look professional as well. The images that are used do not effect the writing (not covered up and still readable). The text size used is a reasonable size (meaning that it is not huge on the page). Before the writer writes the article there is a small introduction just before it which makes the layout look professional.

Representation
The model is fully clothed, so his dressed appropriately for the double spread in the magazine. The way the model is clothed creates an impression that the main audience for this magazine is males that are above the age of 16 to the mid 20's (25). The model is wearing clothes that people who listen to this genre of music would also wear, this makes him appropriately dressed. The images are also different shot types which makes the double page spread more effective. The shot types used is a mid shot and a long shot which shows the variation on the double page spread.

Audience
The audience that this music magazine is aimed at is 16-25 year olds who are male. I can tell this because of the way that the model is represented. I can also tell this because of the colour scheme that is used on the double page spread. The three colours are white, black and green which these colours would be associated with this genre.

Research and Planning: Contents page analysis

Here is my contents page analysis which was produced on voice thread.

Research and Planning: Audience questionnaire results

Here is the results that I got from my questionnaires. I asked 15 people from different ages and different genders to fill the questionnaires. With these results they will help me produce my music magazine cover. It will also give me an idea of what to include on my contents page and the double page spread.

I asked people this question because I wanted to get an idea of whether people buy music magazines. 1/3 of the people that I passed the questionnaire to said that they bought music magazines regularly, whereas 2/3's of the people said that they don't buy music magazines regularly. From this research I have found that the majority of people don't buy music magazines and may use other things like websites or apps on the phones to read the magazines.
I asked people this question because I wanted to know which artists were the most popular. This helped me because now I know which artist to make as my main article. The artist with the most is Eminem with 47%. With this I know which artist to include if needed. I also know to make the model similar to Eminem in some way, through the way his dressed etc. I will also include the following artists that were also mentioned which are Dr. Dre, Bruno Mars and Wiz Khalifa.
I asked this question because I was going to call my magazine AUTHORITY, but I wanted to know whether to call it that so I asked the public. The majority all said yes to the masthead name, therefore I am going to call my ,magazine when I produce it AUTHORITY.
I asked this question because I wanted to know whether there should be a male or female model on the front cover of my music magazine. More people preferred to have a male. I believe that more people chose male because the genre of music is more male based so the people would of gone of that. When I come to produce my magazine I am going to use a male model because more people wanted male than female.
I asked this question because I wanted to know which 3 colours that I should use as my colour scheme when I come to produce my magazine. Most people said blue, black and red were all colours which would all be associated with this genre of music. With these results I will consider using this colour scheme for my music magazine cover.
I asked this question because I wanted to know what shot type the model should be on my magazine cover. Most people said a mid-shot so when i take pictures of the model I will take different shots but I will defiantly include a mid-shot in the magazine. For my contents page and my double page spread I will include all of the shots above to have a variety in my magazine.
I asked this question because i wanted to know how many cover lines should be on the front cover. I wanted to know this so that there is not a cluster of stories on the magazine cover but enough to interest the reader. Most people said 5 cover lines which I see as reasonable so when I make my magazine cover I will have 5 cover lines, with one of them being the main cover line which is related to the model on the front.

Research and Planning: Double page spread draft

Here is my double page spread draft. I have drawn a draft to get an idea of what I want my double page spread to look like when I come to produce it on InDesign later on after I have produced my magazine cover and my contents page for the magazine.

Research and Planning: Contents page draft

Here is my contents page draft. I have produced this to get a brief idea what I want my contents page to look like in my music magazine. I will keep this design when I come to produce my contents page however I may change it to make it look better if there is any need to.

Research and Planning: Music magazine drawn draft

Here is a draft of my music magazine cover and my contents page. The magazine cover that I have drawn out includes the masthead, 5 different cover lines, barcode and date and finally the model/main image.

Masthead
I have called my magazine AUTHORITY. I have called it this because I feel like this name connects with the genre of music that I am among the magazine at. Most artists that are in this genre believe that they have authority over what they do so that is why I have called my magazine that. The font that I have chosen of my magazine cover is a blocky font. This is because most artists logos like Eminem's and Jay-Z's are in some for of blocky font therefore I should also make my font blocky because it has a purpose to this genre of music.

Cover lines
I have used different cover lines. I have done some research on the internet to see what cover lines I should use. I have included one main cover line which is "Eminem goes BERZERK". I have also included artists such as "Snoop Dog", which would be included in the magazine. I have also changed the font from the cover line so that it is unique and different to the masthead.

Research and Planning: Shot type research

Here is my shot type research on these specific shots.

Research and Planning: Presentation on my target audience

Here are screenshots of my power point about my target audience towards Rap and R&B music. The power point is used to explain the; age, gender, interests, ocupation, class, wealth, outlook on future and socio-econonic groups.

Research and Planning: Masthead designs (Hip-Hop/Rap)

Here are the three fonts that I would consider using when I come to create my masthead for my music magazine cover.
