Research and Planning: Collage of Mastheads (Hip-Hop/Rap)

Here is a collage of mastheads that are relevant to the genre of music. The colour of the mastheads are either black or red. This is a recurring colour in all of these mastheads. These colours are bold colours and stand out. They are used because they are eye catching colours. The masthead font is a blocky font, so when I come to do my masthead I need to make it black or red and to make the font blocky. This makes it look Rap and R&B style.

Research and Planning: Collage of magazines (Hip-Hop/Rap)

Here is a collage of magazines that fit my genre of music which is Hip-Hop/Rap. The main images that are used on the front covers are mainly medium close ups and medium long shots. The masthead is at the side of the persons face if the magazine is called "XXL". If it is any other logo it is behind the person. The cover lines are always at the side of the person on both sides of the magazine. This is to fill the magazine up completely. The magazines all use three colours in there magazine. This is what all magazines need to stick to and when I come to produce my magazine I need to choose three colours when i come to produce my magazine. The clothes that the rappers are wearing are suits to make them look rich and successful also some of them are wearing casual clothes to make them look like the working class. This is because this type of music is aimed at people who are working class.

Research and Planning: Music magazine cover analysis 2

Here is a VIBE magazine. This magazine is aimed at an audience that is interested in Hip-Hop and Rap music. The age range that this music is aimed to is teenagers and young adults. On the magazine we can see that the masthead is large. The colour scheme of the masthead is just red.The masthead is a block font which shows that it is to do with rap. The main image is a medium longshot. The main image shows Akon having no emotion on his facial expressions. This is to show that he is confiednt in what he does and he is showing that he is better than everyone else. The colour scheme of the magazine cover is black, red and gold. The magazine cover needs to stick to only three colours on the cover to make it simple. The coverlines on this magazine cover are naming artists like 'Ne-Yo and Robin Thicke' to tell the user of the magazine who will be inside the magazine. One specific coverline has a large font than anyothers, this is so the user knows who the artist is on the front of the magazine cover and which artist the magazine issue is aiming at, for this magazine it is Akon. The coverlines also tell the user what will be in the magazine for example 'How to save mixtapes?'. This is tell the user the main contents of the magazine. The magazine has an issue date at the bottom left hand corner. This is to make the magazine look professional but also tell the user when the magazine was made. Also in the left hand corner is a barcode and price. This is to tell the user the price of the magazine. This makes the magazine look professional.

On the magazine we can see that the masthead is large. The colour scheme of the masthead has red fading into the black. The masthead is a block font which shows that it is to do with rap. The main image is a medium longshot. The main image shows Eminem having no emotion on his facial expressions. This is to show that he is confiednt in what he does and he is showing that he is better than everyone else. The clothes that Eminem is wearing is a black vest top/tank top. This is so that he is able to show his tattoos and to ale him look big. The colour scheme of the magazine cover is black, red and grey/silver. The magazine cover needs to stick to only three colours on the cover to make it simple. The coverlines on this magazine cover are naming artists like 'Kanye West and Jay-Z' to tell the user of the magazine who will be inside the magazine. One specific coverline has a large font than anyothers, this is so the user knows who the artist is on the front of the magazine cover and which artist the magazine issue is aiming at, for this magazine it is Eminem. The coverlines also tell the user what will be in the magazine for example 'Who is the best rapper ever?'. This is tell the user the main contents of the magazine. The magazine has an issue date at the bottom left hand corner. This is to make the magazine look professional but also tell the user when the magazine was made. The coverlines used are rhetorical questions. This is to make the user think about the favourite rappers and also to make an opinion. This is to get the user involved within the magazine. The coverlines are at the side of the main image or behind it. This is to make the main image the most important part of the magazine cover.

Research and Planning: Contents mock up

Here is my contents page mock up. The contents page was produced on indesign. The masthead of my contents page is 'contents'. This page is used to show the list of what the stories the magazine has inside.

Research and Planning: Final college magazine cover

Here is my final college magazine cover that I have created on Photoshop. On the magazine I have a black background which was one the colours that I was told to use in my feedback videos because the colours used are in the Hyde Clarendon logo. This is also the same with the Masthead which is 'hyde clarendon news' I have the font similar to the Hyde Clarendon logo and I have the font colour as yellow because it is one of the colours that were recommended by the people that are in my feedback videos. I have used the Masthead as 'hyde clarendon news' because in my feedback videos I was told to call my magazine 'Hyde news' but I have made it more specific to the college by putting Hyde Clarendon to make it more relevant to the college. I have used a font size of 72pt and the font is Cooper Black. I have used pink and yellow as my cover lines. The font size for my cover line is 20pt and the font is Cooper Black because the Masthead is Cooper Black so I am keeping the font consistent throughout the magazine cover. I have used the same font as my title show consistency and the magazine being professional. The cover lines I have used were influenced on the feedback videos. I was told from students that I should include technology and the gossip around college. I have wrote about the brand new iPhone 6 and 16 and pregnant. I have also used University as a cover lone because most college students want to go to University after they are done at college so college students would be interested in information about Universities. On the college magazine cover I have a main image. The main image is a college student holding books to show that he is a college student. The model is also wearing college clothes which would also show that he is a college student. He has the Hyde Clarendon badge around his neck therefore showing that he is apart of Hyde Clarendon and showing that he is a college student. I used the spot healing brush tool to remove blemishes such as spots and moles on the students face and neck. this is to make the magazine more professional. The image is a medium close up because it is more of a variation to the students entire body.  I have a barcode in the bottom half corner. This is to show that the magazine is professional. Also the price is next to the barcode which shows that it is professional. The font size of the price is 16pt. The font size needs to vary on the magazine because if the font was as big as the masthead it would be to big and wouldn't fit on the page. The font size is big for the masthead to make it stand out and to catch the users eye. I have an issue date in the top right hand corner to show when the issue was produced. This is to make it look more professional. I have a star in the right hand corner. The tool I have used is the custom shape tool to create this tool. This is to show that the magazine is a new issue. This is used to make it look professional. Finally I have a selling line underneath the masthead. The selling line is "the best college news around", this is used to show that it is college news and that it is aimed at college students.

Research and Planning: Images for college magazine

Here are the images that I have taken of a college student for the front cover of my magazine. On the images you can see the college student holding college books which shows that this person is a college student. I took the pictures inside the college where it wasn't so bright on the college students face. I only took two pictures because the pictures that I took were good enough with the lighting on the face of the college student. I have used the first picture on my magazine cover because the lighting was better on the college students face. Both these pictures are medium close up images so they fit on to the college magazine.

Research and Planning: College magazine to date

Here is the beginning of my college magazine. This is the progress that I have made in my first hour of making the magazine. I have placed the main picture on to the college magazine and i have produced the Masthead which is 'hyde clarendon news'. I have also added a date of when the magazine was issued and my selling line under neath the Masthead.

Research and Planning: Props list

Here is my props list for the student as my main image:

Costumes and Props:

  • A t-shirt that contrasts with the black
  • They need books/notepads to symbolise that they are a college student
  • A pen to ask show that they are a student
Location:
  • The location of the student can be anywhere as the background of the magazine will be black

Research and Planning: Front cover and contents page design

Here are my front cover and contents page design drafts that I did as an idea of what my magazine ma look like. The front cover has a Masthead that is 'hyde clarendon news'. This is so that students would know who the magazine is aimed for. I have done it in lower case because in the Hyde Clarendon logo it is all lower case letters so I did this so that it is similar to the logo. I picked the name because in my response videos I was told to name my magazine 'Hyde news' so I have done but I have put 'hyde clarendon news' to make it more relevant to the college. I will also make the Masthead pink as it is one of the colours that I was told to use in my video responses. On my college magazine I have used a long shot image for my main picture but when I come to make the college magazine on Photoshop I am going to have a medium close up image of a college student holding a book to show that they are a college student. I have the cover lines on the left hand side of the magazine. I have looked at my response videos and I have picked cover lines that are relevant to what they said. One person said that they were into technology so I put in a cover line about the new iPhone 6. Someone also said that they wanted to see the latest news so I added a cover line about a college student being pregnant. I also put a cover line about the new college being built in Ashton. Finally I made a cover line about University because most college students are interested in going to university. In the top right hand corner I have put a date of when the magazine was issued. In the bottom left hand corner I have added a barcode. I have done these two features to make the magazine look more professional.

Next is my contents page. Here on my contents page I have the font matching my front cover this is to show that it is professional and consistent. I have also used the same font for my stories as I have done with my cover lines on the front cover. I have added images that match the stories on the contents page to show what the stories are all about. I have added the pictures to make the students more interested in the stories. The colours that I am going to use are going to stay the same with the background of the contents page being black, the masthead and stories to be in yellow and the information about the stories to stay as pink. I have stuck with these colours because in my feedback videos the college students said to use black, yellow and pink also these colours are there college colours in the logo so the colours have relevance to the college. This is so that it looks professional. The stories that I have chosen are relevant to the feedback videos this is so that the students would also be interested in the magazine. I has told to include stories about technology and recent news in Hyde and college news like the new college that is being built in Ashton.

Research and Planning: Masthead fonts

These are my examples of Mastheads. These Mastheads are used to match the font with the text. The first Masthead is 'Death Metal' which is used to fit with the metal genre of music. I have used this font because it looks gothic. I have used black because black is associated with that genre of music. The second Masthead is 'PopWorld' which is used to fit with the pop genre of music. I have used this font because it looks new and modern. I also used the colour as a sky blue because it looks modern and fashionable. The last Masthead is 'POPCORN' this is associated with films. I have used the font because it looks digital and films are digital. I have used the red because it resembles the red carpet before you walk into a movie premier.

Research an Planning: Target response questions

Here are the questions that I asked college students about my college magazine:

  1. First things you look for in a magazine?
  2. What cover lines/stories do you want to read in a college magazine?
  3. How should an image look in a college magazine, for example teacher or students, clothes etc?
  4. What three colours would you use for a Hyde Clarendon college magazine?
  5. Any idea on what you would call the college magazine for Hyde Clarendon? (Masthead)

Research and Planning: Target response videos

These videos above are the target response to my questions. The feedback that the college students will help me when producing my college magazine.

Research and Planning: Medium close-up images

Here are some medium close-up images. When I come to create my college magazine front cover I need to include a medium close-up as the main picture like one of the pictures above.

Research and Planning: College magazine cover analysis 2

College magazine analysis 2:

The target audience for this magazine is college students, young adults and people who are interested about the college. You can tell this because of the Masthead. The masthead is titled 'College' so this shows that it is a college magazine. You can also tell that it is a college magazine because of the main picture. The main picture shows a successful man who looks to be happy with life. This is encouraging college students to be like him so they are more successful in life. The publication line also identifies that this is a college magazine because it is 'YOUR EXCLUSIVE GUIDE TO EVERYTHING HOT AND HAPPENING' which shows that they are trying to make college students interested in the magazine. The cover lines such as 'Make money on campus' would make college students interested in the magazine as most students struggle with money and may need help so they would use the magazine as guidance. The colours used as the background is a black but then a glow of light around the man to signify that the man maybe important and to make the main picture stand out. The colours used for the text stand out because they are bright colours and easily readable for the college students. The two colours also contrast well together with the background.

The barcode at the bottom left of the magazine makes it look more professionally made. Also the date in the top right hand corner 'SUMMER 2000' also makes it look more of a professional magazine cover. The cover lines also make it look professional because they are at the side of the magazine and are not covering the main picture so that the picture is clear.

Research and Planning: College magazine cover analysis

Here is a college magazine front cover. The target audience of the college magazine is college students. I believe that the target audience is college students because of the image and the title as it 1is titled 'College'. From this magazine I would like to copy the main image to show that it is a college magazine and to have a big title so people have an understanding of what the magazine is about. I would also like to copy the sub headings as it tells the user what the main stories are in the magazine. The types of stories that are shown on the magazine are popular stories that are aimed towards the target audience for example, "Why we love Blackberry" is a story that is on the front cover. Blackberry is a phone company and the phones that were produced were popular at the time the college magazine was made.

Ideas that I have gathered from the magazine are that I need to implement a big image linking to the title of the magazine e.g. a college student with the title to have something to do with college. I would also use a different select of colours that match like the black and yellow which contrast well together. When I create my college magazine I need to have two colours that contrast well like on the image above with the black and yellow.

Here is a college contents page. The target audience of this contents page is college students. I think that the target audience is college students is because some of the main articles are based at college students e.g. the 'University' and 'College activities & club'. From this contents page I would like to copy parts of it when I create my college magazine contents page. The things that I would like to copy are to have a list of articles that link to the front cover of the magazine. I would also use the same colours that have been used on the front cover so that it is the same and looks more professional. I would also have images that link to the articles like on the image above with the contents page. I would pick stories that would be popular for college students and hopefully people would enjoy it because it links to them and make them more interested in reading the magazine.

Ideas that I have gathered from the contents page is that I need to have articles that link and are relevant to the college. I need colours that are the same as the front cover so that it looks more professional. I also need images that link to the articles that are on the contents page like on the image above.

Research and Planning: Adobe Indesign tutorial

Today I have used Adobe Indesign to create a film review. The film I have chosen is 22 Jump Street. First I used the Create guides tool and created 3 columns so I could have my review places onto the background accurately. I then used the place tool to place the text onto the page from my Word document. I also used the place tool to place the image on to the page. I then used the text tool to write '22 Jump Street' as the title of the review and changed the font to century. Finally I created a background by using the rectangle tool. With this I then changed the colour of the background to green. However the background was set forward and I couldn't see the review so I right clicked the background and went to the set to back tool and then the background was at the back and we could see the review

Research and Planning: Photoshop challenge

Today I have used different tools to complete the Photoshop challenge. First I used the tool bar: file - new. This was so I could get the background. I then used the horizontal type tool so I was able to type 'AS Media Studies' on to the background. I also changed the font to Century Gothic and the colour as red. I then changed the background colour to blue by goingto the top tool bar selecting layer and then the new fill layer tool. I then changed the text to have a drop down shadow. I used the layer style tool to change the text to have a drop shadow. I also added an image from the internet and dragged the image into Photoshop and re-sized the picture and then place it underneath the text. I then changed the persons hair colour by using the brush tool. I changed the opacity to 15% to make the hair more realistic. Finally I drew a rectangle using the rectangle tool as a boarder as a background for the image. I dragged the layer underneath the image so that it would go behind the image.

Research and Planning: Photoshop CD tutorial

Today I have created a CD cover on photoshop. I have created this through using a range of tools. The tools that I have used are filters to change the colour of the horn to a brass colour and the CD to cyan.I used the magic wand tool to cut the horn out of its original background so I could then place it on to the CD cover. I have also used the horizontal type tool to add the title onto the CD cover. I finally used the Filter-Distort-Wave tool to change the background have waved notes. I finally used the transform controls tool so I could change the shape accurately of the CD and the horn so they could both fit onto the cover.

Research and Planning: Photoshop skin tutorial

Today I have used a different select of tools to change this woman's face. The tools that I have used today are the Brush tools for the checks, lipstick, eye liner and hair. I have used colour picker to change the colours of her lipstick etc. I also used the spot healing tool to clear her spots and freckles away from her face.
